Hits & Misses: January Edition

It is the second week of February, but I have been trying out so many new products that I had to share them in a January hits & misses.  Let’s start out with the winners!

For the base of my makeup, I have really enjoyed mixing my Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer with my MUFE Face & Body Liquid Makeup. The Nars Tinted Moisturizer has a more matte finish which can be a little bit drying for my skin, so I mix it with my MUFE foundation to get a dewier finish.  To set my makeup, I have been loving Laura Geller’s Balance N Brighten powder because it color corrects my skin and blurs out any imperfections while still being extremely light weight.

Since I’ve moved back to California, I’ve ironically gotten paler, so bronzer is a necessity and Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer has been my saving grace.  It’s matte, so it’s perfect for contouring and adding a little color to my face without making me look like a glitter ball.  I like to use a light hand because it is extremely pigmented and a little goes a long way.

My final face product was a bit of a splurge, but after using it for a month and a half, I have no regrets.  This product has gotten rave reviews since it hit the market and it is the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Radiant Light.  This powder is so beautiful, luxurious, and versatile.  I use it as a highlight on my cheekbones, down my nose, and on my cupids bow.  I also dust it over my blush to give my complexion a more bronzy effect.  Basically, I use it all over ma face!  This powder gives you such a natural glow that it makes you look like you have perfect, glowy skin.  Maybe it’s Maybelline…nope it’s Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder.

For the past month or so, I have been on a lipstick kick.  I’ve tried more lipsticks than I can count and for some reason, I never feel like lipsticks look good on me.  My lips are naturally very pigmented, so whenever I try a lipstick, my natural lip color ends up altering the color of the lipstick and it always looks a little bit funky.  That is why I have fallen head over heals with Clinque’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey.  Don’t let the color in the tube scare you because this lipstick is super sheer, but it builds beautifully and it is really hydrating.  Instead of covering my natural lip color, it just enhances it.

Finally, for my hair, I’ve been loving Aveda Color Conserve Strengthening Treatment.  The last week of January, I went for the plunge and went ombre – a very subtle ombre.  I didn’t touch my roots and only dyed the bottom of my hair, but I wanted something that was going to prevent the color from fading.  Since I went to an Aveda salon, I figured that an Aveda product would work best.  This leave-in treatment adds moisture and shine back into my hair and it prevents color from fading for up to 6 weeks.

That pretty much wraps up the hits – now on to the products that didn’t live up to the hype.

First is the Simple Ultra-Light Gel Moisturizer.  I normally like Simple products because they are gentle and good for sensitive skin, but this moisturizer was the opposite of light and did nothing for me.  When I first tried it, the consistency automatically threw me off because it was literally a clear gel and it reminded me of aloe vera.  It had the same effect as aloe vera because after you apply it to the skin, it feels a little tacky and then eventually, it sinks in.  This moisturizer was not ultra-light because after I put it on, I could feel the tackiness and even when it is absorbed into my skin, I could still feel a thin layer of moisturizer.  Needless to say, I returned it immediately.

The last miss of January is a lip product – remember when I said I was on a lipstick kick?  A while back, em cosmetics by Michelle Phan was doing a buy one, get one free deal and being a sucker for a good deal, I decided this was a great opportunity to try some of her products.  I decided to try out her lipsticks because they got really good reviews and so I ended up buying 3 and getting 3 for free.  Now these lipsticks are super pigmented, but they are not at all moisturizing and they actually dry out my lips throughout the day.  Applying them was a pain because even when I exfoliated and moisturized my lips before, they would settle into lines and go on a bit patchy.  They are not super creamy like they are advertised and overall, I was just not satisfied.  I bought a mixture of dark, vampy colors and natural pinks and I don’t really like any of them.

I hope you all had a great January and half of February! What products are you loving so far? Leave them in the comments below!

Stay Chic!
