Summer Refreshers

Last night, I was so tired that I fell asleep with my makeup on.  I know, I know, this is a makeup no-no.  Luckily, I wasn’t wearing a full face of makeup, so I did not break out severely.  When I woke up this morning, I immediately took a shower and washed my face with my Clarisonic.  My face was looking a little dull, so I decided to do a face mask.

My go-to face mask is the Queen Helene Mint Julep mask. (you can buy it here)

Here’s what the mask looks like on:

This mask has the best of both worlds–it is both effective and affordable.  First off, its scent is super minty, so if you like the smell of mint, you will love this mask.  Secondly, it cleans deep into your pores and removes all the impurities.  You know the mask is working because you can feel your face tighten and tingle.  Next, it makes your face super soft and dries out any pimples you may have.  Finally, you get a lot of product for only $4.00.  I don’t recommend using this mask frequently because it may dry out your face.

If I just want to replenish my skin, I will use My Beauty Diary Apple Polyphenol face mask.

This face mask is a paper mask.  For $13.00 you get 10 face masks.  The good thing about this mask is that it works like a serum: you leave it on for 30 minutes and then you rub the remaining liquid on your face.  Once the serum dries on the skin, it will give your face a nice glow and a dewy finish.  This mask works best for younger skin because it will give you a more youthful look.  I really like My Beauty Diary face masks because they are made by an Asian company, so they use ingredients that complement Asian skin types.  Also, the ingredients used are all natural, so your skin is less likely to react badly to the mask.  My Beauty Diary makes a variety of face masks, so if you are interested, you can read the descriptions here.

If you want a mask that is effective and fun, try Queen Helene’s Grape Seed Extract Peel Off mask. (you can buy it here)

This mask is harder to use because its consistency is gooey and a little sticky.  As a result, it is hard to get an even layer.  Once the mask dries, the fun begins.  Peeling it off is so much fun because you can see all the gunk that it removed from your pores.  Afterward, your skin feels toned and soft.

If you want a mask that is light and tones the skin, try Skin Food products.   I use the Rice Mask and the Cucumber Mask.  The Rice Mask is used to soften and brighten the face, while the Cucumber Mask is used to freshen up the skin.  The one bad thing about these face masks is that their texture is very chunky and if you leave them on for more than 10 minutes, they will start to irritate your skin. If you want a mask that deep-cleans and tightens your pores and exfoliates, try Lush’s Mask of Magnaminty.  This mask, like the Skin Food mask, does not dry on the face.  It has a light peppermint scent and aduki beans to exfoliate away dead skin.  You can use it every week, and the lady at the Lush store told me she uses it every day, so it is more gentle than the other masks.  This mask doesn’t tighten your pores as much as the Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask, but if you have sensitive skin, I would recommend this product.  It’s gentle enough that it won’t irritate the skin, but it still deep-cleans your pores and tightens the skin.

If you want a mask that is REALLY fresh, go for one of Lush’s Fresh Face Masks.  These masks only have a shelf life of 3 weeks, but you can get 3-4 uses out of them.  Since these masks are made of fresh ingredients, you can only buy them at Lush stores.  I’ve only tried the Cupcake Mask because it smells like a chocolate cupcake–every time I use it, I want to eat my face!  Not only does it smell delicious, but it really clears up your skin.  The only problem I have with these masks is that I always forget that I have them sitting in my fridge, so I end up wasting some product. (can find Lush products here)

I hope this post helps all of you try out some face masks.  If there are any that you want me to try, just comment below.

  1. here’s strong evidence that grape seed extract is beneficial for a number of cardiovascular conditions. Grape seed extract may help with a type of poor circulation (chronic venous insufficiency) and high cholesterol. Grape seed extract also reduces swelling caused by injury and helps with eye disease related to diabetes.`
